As Far As Eye Can See began as a crafty, post-work gathering of friends and grew into a large scale, textile artwork raising funds for the New Zealand city of Christchurch following the devastating earthquakes that hit in 2011. The resulting artwork emerged as a symbolic eye made from hundreds of cream toned crochet ‘pixels’, and was exhibited as part of the South Australian Living Artist Festival.
I took a lead role in co-ordinating the project including developing a project identity, promotional items and media outreach. The design and illustration used in these materials drew on the motif of wool and themes of collaboration.
We also created an engaging online platform to receive community donations. The interactive site featured a disguised replica of the eye. Users could roll over individual squares to learn about the design and it’s creator, and choose to ‘reveal the square’ by donating. As donations came in, the eye was gradually revealed and added a richness to the donation process.
The project was successful in gaining features in prominent Australian publications including Frankie, Textile Fibre Forum and Peppermint; increased awareness; and raised much needed funds for Christchurch.
